Gum Disease

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the tissues and bone that support your teeth.  If untreated, gum disease can lead to teeth becoming loose and even falling out.

What causes gum disease?

Though there are many medical conditions that cause gum disease, one of the primary reasons is poor oral hygiene.  An inconsistent oral care routine can lead to the buildup of plaque on your teeth.  Plaque that builds up on your teeth is full of bacteria that release a toxin that causes the gums to become infected.  Eventually these toxins break down gum and bone tissue which can lead to tooth loss.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

There are numerous symptoms of gum disease.  Some of these include red and swollen gums, gums that are receding or pulling away from your teeth, sores in your mouth and chronic bad breath.  Tender gums that bleed during brushing are also a classic symptom.

How can gum disease be prevented?

The best way to fight gum disease is to follow a daily brushing and flossing routine.  Maintaining a consistent oral care regimen will prevent the onset of gum disease.  Also, you should visit your dental professional on a regular basis.
